What is Prima Hyadum

Prima Hyadum is the first star of the Hyades, the open cluster that draws the bull's face in Taurus. A yellow giant 161 light-years away, it belongs to the closest star group to our Solar System. The ancient Greeks saw in the Hyades the sisters who weep tirelessly for their fallen brother, which is why their rising in the winter sky was tied to the rainy season.

Where it is and when to see it

Prima Hyadum lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
