What is HIP 19983
In the enigmatic Giraffe — a late, faintly luminous constellation — vibrates an orange giant 260 light-years away. Its light set out when the French Encyclopedists, led by Diderot and D'Alembert, were publishing the first volumes of the «Encyclopédie». Cooler than the Sun yet notably larger, its amber tone stains a polar corner of the sky often overlooked by popular star charts.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 19983 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
