30 Tauri burns as a blue B-class star about 450 light-years away, set in the rich field of the Bull not far from the Hyades cluster. B stars are young and violent suns: surface temperatures many times that of our own, lifespans brief on a cosmic scale. The light arriving tonight set out in the early sixteenth century, as Magellan was preparing his circumnavigation.
Where it is and when to see it
30 Tauri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
