111 Tauri lies only 47 light-years away, a near neighbour of the Sun whose light set out less than half a century ago and still travels within a single human lifetime. An F-type star slightly hotter and brighter than the Sun, it shows subtle brightness variations betraying an active atmosphere. The precision of the Hipparcos and Gaia missions has mapped its distance to a margin measured in fractions of a light-year.
