Tau-5 Eridani is a binary system of two near-twin blue stars, both of class B8 V, burning at temperatures close to 12,000 K. Their combined light reaches Earth from some 293 light-years, crossing the long winding course of the celestial river Eridanus. Two hot sisters orbiting in silence, indistinguishable to the naked eye but revealed as a pair by careful spectroscopy.
Where it is and when to see it
Tau 5 Eridani lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
