Kappa Eridani burns with the deep blue of hot B-type stars, more than five hundred light-years away along the long sinuous course of the celestial river. Eridanus is one of the sky's most extensive constellations, and this star occupies its austral stretch, far from the familiar names of northern winter. Its light easily quintuples the distance the Sun's light covers in a human lifetime.
Where it is and when to see it
Kappa Eridani lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
