What is 5 Tauri

5 Tauri burns as an orange giant more than three hundred and forty light-years away, on the outskirts of the Bull where Aldebaran rules the scene. Its cool, steady light was already on its way when telescopes were first being aimed at the heavens. A quiet ember among more famous neighbours —its K-type spectrum betrays an atmosphere cooled by age, far from the youthful fire of the Hyades cluster.

5 Tauri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 51° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 62° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 43° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 77° S.
