In Cepheus, almost within reach of the celestial pole, glows a white type-A star, hotter than the Sun and of cutting light. Its brightness has been on the road for 203 years: it set off in 1822, the very year Champollion deciphered the Egyptian hieroglyphs by leaning on the Rosetta Stone. A lucid flame, fixed in the north, where the sky scarcely moves.

HIP 14844 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
