What is HIP 12072
In the chained silhouette of Andromeda gleams an orange giant some 624 light-years away. Its light set off around 1402, when the Chinese fleet of Zheng He was preparing its treasures and the world had not yet glimpsed the routes of the modern Pacific. Cooler than the Sun but swollen by stellar ageing, its amber glow hangs in the night like a slow lantern.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 12072 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
