Omega Fornacis burns with the deep blue of a hot B-type star, 484 light-years away within the Furnace —a late constellation also devised by Lacaille in honour of the chemist's furnace. Its modest naked-eye glow conceals a surface temperature several times that of the Sun and an evolutionary pace far swifter than that of yellow stars.
Where it is and when to see it
Omega Fornax lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
