In quiet Cetus blinks a red variable giant of class M. The light now reaching us departed around 1444, when Gutenberg was perfecting the movable-type press and Cosimo de' Medici was nurturing early Florentine humanism. The star breathes: its brightness rises and falls in slow cycles like those of a deep-water creature, a reminder that many lights of the Milky Way pulse rather than hold steady.
