What is Omicron Grus
Omicron Gruis is a yellow-white star in the Crane, the elegant bird of the southern sky mapped by Dutch navigators at the end of the sixteenth century. It lies 100 light years away — close enough to count as a modest galactic neighbour, distant enough to fade among the dimmer stars of Bayer's catalogue. Its light set out when the First World War had not yet broken out.
Where it is and when to see it
Omicron Grus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August, when it culminates around midnight.

- From Sydney it culminates about 71° above the horizon.
It can be seen from anywhere south of 37° N.
It ranks no. 23 in brightness among the 39 stars of Grus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Alnair, the brightest: it lies about 14° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
