What is Omicron Grus
Omicron Gruis is a yellow-white star in the Crane, the elegant bird of the southern sky mapped by Dutch navigators at the end of the sixteenth century. It lies 100 light years away — close enough to count as a modest galactic neighbour, distant enough to fade among the dimmer stars of Bayer's catalogue. Its light set out when the First World War had not yet broken out.
Where it is and when to see it
Omicron Grus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
