In Lacerta, the little lizard of the autumn sky, burns a blue star. Its light crossed more than six centuries before reaching us: it set out around 1402, when Tamerlane defeated the Ottoman sultan at Ankara and the Castilians landed on Lanzarote. Its scorching surface, far hotter than the Sun's, lends it that lavender hue worn only by young stars.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 113222 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
