What is HIP 112117
One of the few truly nearby stars in this batch: a solar yellow only 77 light-years away, set in the Crane, that elegant southern silhouette. Its light departed around 1949, the year NATO was established and the Federal Republic of Germany was born —the beginning of the world order we still inhabit. An older sister of the Sun, close enough that its glow still holds the temperature of the postwar.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 112117 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
