What is Sigma 2 Grus
Sigma-2 Gruis is a white A-type star about 215 light-years away, in the southern Crane —the slender bird that sixteenth-century European navigators drew above the southern horizon. Its cool light crosses that of nearby Alnair, one of the brightest stars in the southern hemisphere. Sigma-2 plays a background role there, marking the silhouette of the outstretched wings.
Where it is and when to see it
Sigma 2 Grus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
