What is HIP 111362

Lacerta, the autumn-sky lizard, guards this yellow G-type star 345 light-years away. Its light set out around 1681, the year the dodo finally vanished from Mauritius according to the last recorded sightings. As one species was disappearing on an Indian Ocean island, this star was dispatching the photons now arriving at magnitude 5.72, a faint echo of a baroque century.

HIP 111362 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
