Nu Grus
What is Nu Grus
Nu Gruis flares 285 light-years away in Grus, the southern constellation Bayer drew from the observations Keyser and de Houtman made in the East Indies. A yellow G-type giant, similar in colour to the Sun but already in its giant phase, it carries an atmosphere far more extended than the solar one. Its warm light stands out among the blue-white tones that dominate the figure of the Crane.
Where it is and when to see it
Nu Grus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August, when it culminates around midnight.

- From Sydney it culminates about 85° above the horizon.
It can be seen from anywhere south of 51° N.
It ranks no. 20 in brightness among the 39 stars of Grus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Alnair, the brightest: it lies about 9° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
