30 Pegasi rides along the Winged Horse, more than 1,270 light-years away. It is a blue B-type star, far hotter, more massive and more luminous than the Sun —the kind of sun destined for a brief life and a spectacular ending. The light presenting it tonight set out in the 8th century, when the sky was being mapped with bronze instruments at the observatories of Baghdad.
Where it is and when to see it
30 Pegasi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
