What is Delta Hydrus

Delta Hydri is a white main-sequence star in the small southern constellation of Hydrus, the little water snake mapped by Dutch navigators crossing the southern seas in the late sixteenth century. At 140 light-years, with a clean and solitary glow, it offers one of the few naked-eye anchors in a region of the sky almost devoid of bright stars.

Where it is and when to see it

Delta Hydrus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August, when it culminates around midnight.

  • From London it never rises above the horizon.
  • From New York it never rises above the horizon.
  • From Sydney it never sets and culminates about 55° up.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 21° N.
