On the neck of Pegasus glows an aged M-type red giant 681 light-years away. Its light began its journey around 1345, in the years immediately before the Black Death reached Europe. Much cooler than the Sun and enormously bloated by age, it is a reddish ember that seems to burn slowly along the flank of the winged horse.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 109471 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
