What is Xi Grus

Xi Gruis is an orange K-type giant at four hundred and sixty-six light-years in the Crane, that southern bird stretching its neck toward the horizon. The constellation, drawn by Dutch navigators, occupies a celestial region far from Greco-Latin legends. The warm, mature light of Xi Gruis travels across a sky that only the southern hemisphere offers in full.

Xi Grus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
