What is Mu 2 Grus

Mu-2 Gruis is a yellow G-type giant about 265 light-years away, set in the long neck of the southern Crane. It shares its small asterism with the optical companion Mu-1, forming a pair visible to the unaided eye for a calm observer beneath a clean sky. The two are not physically bound: their alignment is geometric, one of those coincidences of perspective that the sky offers to the patient gaze.

Where it is and when to see it

Mu 2 Grus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never rises above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 8° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 82° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 48° N.

It ranks no. 14 in brightness among the 39 stars of Grus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Alnair, the brightest: it lies about 6° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
