Omicron Pavonis is an M-type red giant in the Peacock about 894 light-years away. Its cool, distended atmosphere pours a coppery light into the cosmos that travels nearly nine centuries before reaching the eye: when this light first set out, the constellations of the southern sky had not yet been charted in European maps, and no one had ever spoken of a Peacock among the stars. To look at Omicron Pavonis today is, in a sense, to receive a message the universe sent before its own name even existed.
Where it is and when to see it
Omicron Pavonis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
