What is 60 Andromedae
60 Andromedae, also catalogued as b Andromedae, is an orange giant of class K4 burning at about 4,000 kelvin —far cooler than the Sun yet pouring out nearly nine hundred times its energy— some 530 light-years away, east-northeast of Gamma Andromedae. Its radius has swollen past sixty solar diameters. The light arriving tonight set out as the Treaty of Tordesillas was being signed in 1494.

60 Andromedae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
