In the small constellation of Microscopium, drawn in the 18th century by Lacaille in tribute to the instrument. It shines 587 light-years away: its light departed around 1438, when the Medici were consolidating Florence as the capital of the Renaissance. An orange K giant, one of the myriad mature suns scattered across the southern sky.
