What is Kappa Delphinus

Kappa Delphini is a yellow G5 subgiant, almost a mature version of our own Sun: surface near 5,700 degrees, around 2.9 billion years old. At 98 light-years she journeys through the galaxy with a distant companion, an orange subgiant some 200 arcseconds away that shares her proper motion. She belongs to the Dolphin, one of the smallest and most precise constellations, a compact figure leaping over the Milky Way.

Where it is and when to see it

Kappa Delphinus lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
