Omega-1 Cygni is a blue variable giant more than nine hundred light-years away, set in one of the wings of the Northern Cross. Its surface exceeds twenty thousand degrees and pours out invisible ultraviolet light, invisible to us but recorded by space telescopes. The visible light now reaching Earth set out before the chronicles of the Cid had even been written.
Where it is and when to see it
Omega 1 Cygni lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
