28 Cygni is a hot blue B-type star that pulses irregularly along the wing of Cygnus, over a thousand light-years away. Its light —emitted near the close of the first millennium, when European monasteries were still copying manuscripts by hand— only now reaches our retinas. It lies in the luminous corridor of the Orion Arm and is typical of the Be class: wrapped in a fast-spinning disc of gas it has shed itself.
Where it is and when to see it
28 Cygni lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
