In Cygnus burns a rare blue O-type star, one of the hottest and most massive classes in the stellar catalogue. Its light took roughly 1,942 years to reach us: it set out in the 1st century, when Rome was at its peak under the Flavian emperors and Pompeii had not yet been buried by Vesuvius. That almost violet blue marks the heart of the swan with the fury of cosmic youth.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 100069 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
