What is Rho Aquilae

ρ Aquilae was catalogued in the Eagle, but its proper motion proved so persistent that in 1992 it crossed the official boundary between constellations and entered the Dolphin. A white A2 main-sequence star 156 light-years away, with two solar masses, it is approaching us at 23 km/s. One of the few stars whose cartographic redrawing literally changed its home in the sky.

Where it is and when to see it

Rho Aquilae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 54° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 64° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 41° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 75° S.

It ranks no. 19 in brightness among the 72 stars of Aquila in our catalogue. To find it, start from Altair, the brightest: it lies about 9° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
