On the back of the Swan burns a blue-white type-B star, far hotter and more massive than the Sun, whose light wavers softly to the rhythm of a cosmic heart. It has been travelling for more than 2,100 years: it set out when Rome was waging the Punic Wars against Carthage and the Mediterranean was being decided by blood and fire. That ancient flame, still young in stellar terms, peers intermittently over our nights.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 97634 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
