36 Aquilae is a cool red M-type giant about 529 light-years away in the Eagle, not far from the dark river of the Aquila Rift. Its ruddy tone reveals a surface mild by stellar standards, the mark of a star that has already exhausted the hydrogen at its core. The light reaching us tonight set out when European navigators were first rounding South America.
