13 Lyrae is an M-type red giant whose brightness drifts slowly, a barely perceptible pulsation that betrays its unstable nature. It inhabits the small constellation of the Lyre, near the blue glare of Vega. Its light, released nearly three centuries ago, travels from an era when the spectroscopic telescopes that now read its composition did not yet exist.
Where it is and when to see it
13 Lyrae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
