What is 5 Aquilae
5 Aquilae is a white A-type star at 364 light-years, in the Eagle that flies over the summer Milky Way. Its white, almost bluish light contrasts with the golden river of stars surrounding it. Aquila is one of the constellations richest in deep-sky objects: dark nebulae, open clusters, dust regions. A clear flame in the front row before an entire galaxy seen edge-on.
Where it is and when to see it
5 Aquilae lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
