Omega Cassiopeiae burns more than seven hundred light-years away in Cassiopeia, that five-pointed W that stands guard over the north celestial pole without rest. It is a hot blue-white B-type star, a young flame caught in the autumn Milky Way, where open clusters and emission nebulae concentrate. Its sharp glow recalls the defiant pride of the mythological queen who gives the asterism its name.
Where it is and when to see it
Omega Cassiopeiae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
