Its light set out around 541 years ago, near 1485, when Botticelli painted «The Birth of Venus» and the Florentine Renaissance was at its peak. Far cooler than the Sun yet far larger, its deep red is an emblem of cosmic longevity. Ophiuchus stretches across the ecliptic, crossed by the Sun each November; among its modest stars, this ember-like ancient star burns with patience.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 83176 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
