Gudja is a cool red giant inside the constellation Serpens, 382 light-years away. Its reddish tone —proof that its atmosphere barely exceeds 3,500 degrees— is the colour in which stars that have run most of their lives slowly fade. The name comes from Australian Aboriginal traditions and preserves in the modern sky an oral memory that appears in no classical European almanac.

Gudja lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
