Theta Apodis is a cool red M-type variable giant some 369 light-years away inside Apus, a small southern constellation depicting the bird of paradise. Its brightness is not constant: it slowly oscillates, the breathing of an aged star whose internal balance has grown less stable as it advances through the final stages of its evolution.
Where it is and when to see it
Theta Apus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
