Variable starIts story
This variable star in Centaurus is extraordinary: its light has been crossing the void for more than three hundred twenty-six thousand years. It set out when Neanderthals still inhabited Europe and the first modern humans were just beginning to expand out of Africa. A blue-white B-type star, far hotter than the Sun, it pulses variably —its brightness breathing to its own rhythm. A prehistoric forge only now reaching us, a luminous survivor of a world without written language.
