What is 57 Virginis
57 Virginis glows with K-type amber light some 125 light-years away, a notable nearness for a star of its brightness. At magnitude 5.21 it lingers barely within naked-eye reach under dark skies, in a constellation dominated by the dazzling Spica. Modest within the Maiden, its warm light arrives after less than two centuries of travel —a brief journey on stellar scales, almost a stroll through the cosmic neighbourhood.
Where it is and when to see it
57 Virginis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
