50 Virginis stands about 694 light-years away within Virgo, a region rich in distant galaxy clusters. It is a K-class star, orange in tone, with a surface cooler than the Sun s and a brightness that, at this distance, hints at an evolved body. The light reaching us tonight left around 1330, as Italy was entering the Trecento of Petrarch and Boccaccio.
