Toward the Southern Cross, the line of sight crosses a hot blue B-type star lying beyond three hundred thousand light-years —a body lost past the outskirts of the Milky Way—. Its light departed in an age earlier than any human writing, earlier even than the cave paintings. It belongs to a galactic horizon entirely apart from our own.
