What is Pi Virginis
Pi Virginis is a binary in the zodiacal Virgin, 384 light-years away: two components orbiting each other every 283 days without resolving in any telescope. The primary is a rare metallic-lined Am star, white and hot at around eight thousand degrees, twice the Sun's mass and sixty-eight times its light. The companion, nearly half as massive, completes a pair invisible to the eye and perceptible only through the dance of its spectrum.
Where it is and when to see it
Pi Virginis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
