Deep within Centaurus burns a young blue star whose light set out nearly six centuries ago, when the Iberian kingdoms were closing the Reconquista and the seas were opening to the first caravels. A B-type sun, several times hotter and more massive than ours, its surface hovers around twenty thousand degrees. That blue-white glow belongs to an age when world maps still ended at the edge and the southern sky kept its secrets for the navigators who would soon cross the equator.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 57669 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
