What is 44 Ursae Majoris

44 Ursae Majoris recedes into the deep: an orange giant 654 light-years away, far more distant than most of Ursa Major's bright stars. Its light, cool compared with the Sun's, set out at the start of the fourteenth century, before Europe knew the printing press. That we see it now from a small blue point lost in space is, in itself, a quiet optical miracle.

Where it is and when to see it

44 Ursae Majoris lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February, when it culminates around midnight.

  • From London it never sets and culminates about 87° up.
  • From New York it never sets and culminates about 76° up.
  • From Sydney it culminates about 2° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 35° S.

It ranks no. 47 in brightness among the 124 stars of Ursa Major in our catalogue. To find it, start from Alioth, the brightest: it lies about 17° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).

The light you see today left it about 650 years ago.
