Its story
44 Ursae Majoris recedes into the deep: an orange giant 654 light-years away, far more distant than most of Ursa Major's bright stars. Its light, cool compared with the Sun's, set out at the start of the fourteenth century, before Europe knew the printing press. That we see it now from a small blue point lost in space is, in itself, a quiet optical miracle.
