What is HIP 51912
Another orange ember burns in Carina, this one some 263 light-years away. Its light set off around 1763, when the Treaty of Paris was signed and Europe redrew its maps after the Seven Years' War. A K-type giant, cooler and more voluminous than the Sun, it shines with the hue of molten copper, slipping between the white stars of the southern galactic plane.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 51912 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
