What is HIP 51194

In Carina, the keel of the southern Argo ship, a white A-class sun shines 223.3 light-years away. Hotter and brighter than our own, its light departed when European astronomers were travelling to observe the transit of Venus from remote corners of the planet and, by measuring parallaxes, calculating the real distance to the Sun for the first time.

HIP 51194 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
