25 Sextantis belongs to the modest constellation of the Sextant, created by Hevelius in honour of the measuring instrument he lost in the fire that consumed his observatory in 1679. It is a blue B-type variable star, fiercely hot, whose brightness slowly oscillates and whose light crosses some three hundred and forty years before reaching Earth. A silent memorial, written in the sky, to the human effort of charting the stars.
Where it is and when to see it
25 Sextantis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
